Grant to help South Yorkshire lung sufferers breathe easier

A LOTTERY grant of almost £10,000 is set to fund a new health initiative to help tackle lung disease in South Yorkshire.

It will be used to set up a new project, called Air-ways, which will support people across the region with respiratory conditions, including asbestos-related disorders.

The Awards for All funding has been secured by asbestos charity, Sheffield And Rotherham Asbestos Group (SARAG), which will work with Sheffield International Venues (SIV) to deliver the scheme.

The SARAG Air-ways project will provide a series of free six-week fitness sessions run by SIV for people with respiratory diseases.

SIV’s pulmonary exercise referral specialist, Jo Strong, will lead the twice-weekly classes for up to 15 people and will cover a range of circuit-based activities.

Air-ways will be launched with a special event at SIV’s Ponds Forge International Sports Centre on Friday, April 20.

Six-week sessions will then follow at SIV's Concord Sports Centre, Springs Leisure Centre, Hillsborough Leisure Centre, Stocksbridge Leisure Centre and Graves Tennis and Leisure Centre until January 2013.
