CARETAKER PM Boris Johnson’s premiership won another vote of confidence yesterday — despite opposition MPs calling for his “imminent” resignation.

The motion calling for him to go straight away rather than wait for a new Conservative leader to be in place was defeat by 349 votes to 238 in the House of Commons last night.

Labour had tabled a bid for a confidence vote last week which had initially been blocked — stating a vote of confidence would only be allowed to be held against the government, rather than the PM himself.

It comes after months of turmoil in the Conservative party — Mr Johnson announcing his resignation earlier this month.

MP John Healey believes the PM is “discredited” and is “running out of time”.

The Wentworth and Dearne MP said: “Boris Johnson cannot cling on for another three months after the lies and chaos he — and the Conservatives — have inflicted on the rest of us.

“Now Britain is facing the worst cost of living crisis in decades.

“Yet the fantasy finances from Tory wannabe leaders show that Britain doesn't just need to replace the Tory at the top. Britain needs a fresh start.”

Rotherham MP Sarah Champion questioned the “overall morality” of the government and its leadership is failing the country.

The Rotherham MP added: “Boris Johnson's continuation in office is untenable. He has betrayed the trust of the British people and demeaned his office. He has shown no humility, no recognition of his own role in his downfall.

“The cabinet he has assembled is made up of only of those willing to put themselves ahead of what is right for our country.

“The result is a Government paralysed, unable to act to address the huge challenges our country currently faces, from the skyrocketing cost of living to the war in Ukraine.

“Boris Johnson should go now, not squat in Downing Street whilst the Conservative Party plays out its latest melodrama.”

Tory MPs Nick Fletcher and Alexander Stafford were approached for comment but have not responded.
