Go-ahead for A57 traffic scheme

LONG-awaited plans to reduce traffic on the A57 have been approved by Rotherham Borough Council planners.

The £15m scheme, first mooted in the late 1990s, has been amended several times, but it is now planned to extend the dual carriageway and turn the Todwick crossroads into a roundabout.

The speed limit will be reduced to 50mph and planners say the scheme will improve highway safety, reduce delays and aid regeneration at the former pit site at Dinnington.

Planning permission for the new A57 last for three years, meaning that work on the project must start by 2014.

The council will put about £2 million into the project, the rest coming from the Department for Transport.
