Girls organise Japan fundraising effort

FOUR teenage friends have joined up to collect cash to send to earthquake-ravaged Japan.

Thomas Rotherham College student Humairaa Rashid (16) decided to do her bit after seeing the devastating news unfold in the Far East.

Sister Hafsah (15), who attends Oakwood Technology College, became involved by baking rice crispy cakes to sell.

And their cousin Aqeelah Iqbal (17) and friend Siyka Hussain (16) have also joined in the enterprising fund-raising efforts.

Humairaa and Hafsah’s dad Answer (40), of Gerard Road, said it was heart-warming to see the girls want to help out.

He added: “They came to me for a bit of advice on how to get started, but have done it all themselves.

“Humairaa has done little collections for charity before, but nothing like this where she’s organised it from the start.”

Within a few days of collecting the girls had raised more than £275. This weekend they will move their efforts to another part of the borough.

“They’ve been out and about in the Wellgate and Broom areas so far,” said Answer.

“Siyka lives in the Spinneyfield area so they are planning to carry on there this weekend.”
