Girl (15) who survived Manchester Arena bombing shown IRA blast video in Oakwood School class

A TEENAGER caught up in the Manchester terrorist attack was “retraumatised” by being made to watch a video in class of an IRA bomb going off, her angry dad says.

The Oakwood High School student had counselling after witnessing the aftermath of the 2017 horror blast at Manchester Arena, where she escaped injury by a matter of seconds.

But the 15-year-old’s father said she had gone from being happy to “withdrawn, moody and tearful” when a religious studies teacher showed students a clip of an explosion as part of lessons on the Troubles in Northern Ireland.

The Year 10 girl left the classroom upset but her father said he did not believe Oakwood was taking  the incident – understood to have involved a video of bomb squad officers exploding an IRA bomb — seriously.

“The safeguarding staff were trying to make her laugh and no-one from the school management has contacted me to apologise or see how she is,” said the dad, who asked not to be named.

“She was off school for the next two days because she was so upset.

“Normally, she is happy and joyful but she has been tearful, shaking, moody and emotional.

“She went back on the Monday afterwards, even though she was apprehensive, but rang me later in the morning to say she did not feel school was a safe place.”

He added: “It is completely thoughtless. Why they have to show this sort of inflammatory content, I’ve no idea.

“I have serious misgivings about the safeguarding capabilities of the school.

“There has been no consideration given in relation to reaching out to us as parents or of the teacher being made aware of the situation so they could  say it may be upsetting.

“The therapy she had [after the bombing] was wonderful but with PTSD you have to be mindful it could manifest itself at any time.”

The dad has filed an official complaint with Oakwood High and Rotherham Borough Council.

School principal David Naisbitt declined to comment.
