Get vaccinated ahead of winter — health bosses urge those vulnerable to flu

PEOPLE at the highest risk of flu are being urged to get vaccinated ahead of winter amid concerns of rising coronavirus cases.

Herringthorpe Stadium could be used as a temporary flu clinic, Rotherham Clinical Commissioning Group said.

GP Richard Cullen, who chairs the groups said it was more important than ever for those in vulnerable groups to get a flu jab.

“For some, it could be the case that they not only test positive for Covid-19, but have flu at the same time, and we do not want to see that happen,” he said.

“If you are eligible for a flu jab, the first thing you should do is contact your local GP practice, who will advise you on how they will be doing vaccinations this year.”

“The aim is get all of the risk groups their flu jabs first, then the government are looking to bring in extra supplies around October/November time to be able to offer vaccinations to people aged 50 to 64.”

Dr Cullen said GP surgeries were back to full working capacity and had seen a rise in mental health cases following lockdown.

“We are seeing an increased demand for our services, but that is normal for the time of year when pupils starts back to school,” said Dr Cullen.

“The 111 non-emergency number has been expanded, so you can call there for advice if you’re struggling to get through to your GP.

“We are also looking at other ways at how we can respond to people’s needs.”

Dr Cullen stressed that Covid-19 numbers in Rotherham were below those in other areas, but said that people needed to be sensible and responsible in order to avoid another full lockdown.

Those with symptoms should stay home and get tested, he said, adding if people could not get a test they should self-isolate until they can.

“It is going to be a very confusing time, especially now colds and flu are happening more often,” said Dr Cullen.

“But please try and stay calm, and follow all the national and local guidance in place.”
