GCSE celebrations across Rotherham

STUDENTS were celebrating exam success as Rotherham’s GCSE pass rate increased by 3.5 per cent.

Results showed that 60.6 per cent of the borough’s 3,448 pupils achieved at least five A* to C marks including English and maths.

Aston Academy were key to the impressive figures with a pass rate of 78 per cent.

The school’s top performers were Ben Jones, who landed 14 A*s and one A, and Alex Wong with 12 A*s and three As.

Chairman of governors John Barton, said: “With our success, our place as one of the outstanding centres of learning in South Yorkshire is secured.”

Jessica Williams topped the class at Maltby Academy with 12A*s and two As.

The number of students gaining five A* to C grades with English and maths jumped to 70 per cent from 61 last year.

Principal David Sutton said: “The overall results have increased again for the fifth year in succession and this is down to hard work and commitment from students and staff.

“We are seeing young people leave Maltby not only armed with academic success but equipped with the necessary skills, qualities and attributes that will allow them to secure their chosen post-16 destination.”

Luke Cotter was Wales High School’s top achiever with 13A*s, as 56 per cent of students won five A* to C grades with English and maths.

Head teacher John Day said: “Their consistent and determined efforts are certainly worthy of public acknowledgement.”
