ROTHERHAM Art Gallery is hosting the Art Treasures exhibition where the best of around 3,000 items from the borough's fine art collection are now on show.

The exhibition explores the range of Rotherham's hidden artistic treasures, many of which have previously remained unseen due to restrictions on space at their usual home, Clifton Park Museum.

Rotherham's fine art collection began in 1893 when Clifton Park Museum opened.

Since then, the Museum and Art Gallery have acquired important pieces from a number of sources, including well-known local artists, generous benefactors, purchases through grant aid and from the Contemporary Art Society.

For the exhibition, museum staff have gathered together some of the best artworks in the collection and are inviting visitors to tell them what they think.

These thoughts and ideas will help to develop plans for Rotherham's art collection and for Rotherham Art Gallery and its programme of exhibitions over the next few years.

Senior collections officer, Frances Yeo, said: "This exhibition at Rotherham Art Gallery gives visitors the opportunity to see treasures from our storerooms, some of which haven't been on public display before.

"The exhibition is also an opportunity to find out what the people of Rotherham and visitors to Rotherham Art Gallery think about our collection and what they want from the Art Gallery and we're looking forward to hearing visitor comments on the artworks.

"The exhibition continues until the beginning of January, so there is plenty of time to choose your favourite and fill in a voting slip to have your say."

On Tuesday, December 8, from 1pm to 3.30pm, textile artist Nicky Dillerstone will be running a workshop to bring these paintings and sculptures to life.

Participants will learn about Rotherham's collection and be encouraged to respond creatively.

The workshop costs £5 per person and places can be booked through the box office at Rotherham Arts Centre on 01709 823621.
