The 21-year-old plays for Shamrock Rovers in the League of Ireland Premier Division but the Millers want to add him to their squad for their forthcoming League One campaign.

Talks have reached an advanced stage and the former Middlesbrough trainee is believed to be travelling to AESSEAL New York Stadium to wrap up the deal.

A fee is involved for the Republic of Ireland under-21 international who is in the last year of his contract with Rovers.

Rotherham's new head of recruitment, Rob Scott, has operated in Ireland before with previous clubs Brentford and Watford while his number two, Chris Trotter, was at Boro at the same time as Clarke.

The player is known for his pace and has been tracked by a number of English sides.

If he signs, he will challenge Joe Mattock for the left-back role.

The Millers are expected to give a debut tonight to new goalkeeper Daniel Iversen in the New York friendly with West Bromwich Albion (kick-off 7.45pm).
