TWO friends will be pushing themselves to the limit when they embark on a mammoth overnight charity trek.

Salina Askham and Lindsey Blackett are in training for the gruelling 44-mile walk from Thirsk to Whitby tomorrow night.

The pair, who are both keen runners, have completed two 25-mile practice hikes but Salina, of Brampton-Bierlow, said taking on almost double that distance was a daunting prospect.

“It’s definitely a challenge,” she said.

“We have done practice walks but it’s the mental side. You hit a wall after about 17 miles and I’m just hoping we will be carried along with the group mentality.

“We will be setting off at 10pm on the Friday and hoping to get to Whitby by about 2pm the following afternoon.

“I want to get us singing and playing to keep our chins up and keep us upbeat.”

Lindsey, of Swinton, and Salina are among around 20 walkers taking part to raise cash for Matthew’s Friend in Me, which supports terminally-ill children and their families.

The charity was founded by parents Kevin and Sheran Jacobs, of Elsecar, in memory of their son Matthew, who died aged nine of a brain tumour.

Salina has raised £600 so far with Lindsey and held a garden party in aid of the charity during the summer.

The mum of three said: “They organise and do the walk every year and I have been saying I will get involved for a few years but I’ve been busy having babies!
“Now I feel I’m fit again, so let’s go for it.”

Salina said her children — Jenson (7), Emerson (6) and Faryn (3) — were all “very proud” of their mum.

You can sponsor Salina and Lindsey by making a donation to the following bank account: sort code 77-74-10; account number 47252960.
