Free Wi-Fi plan for Rotherham Town Centre

VISITORS to Rotherham Town Centre could soon benefit from free public access Wi-Fi internet if new proposals get the green light.

Rotherham Council’s cabinet and commissioners are set to consider the free Wi-Fi proposal at a meeting on May 21.

Although a number of shops, cafes and organisations already offer free Wi-Fi, there is currently no free public access across the wider town centre.

As well as covering the main town centre shopping district, the proposal also covers public open spaces such as Clifton Park

Cllr Denise Lelliott, RMBCs cabinet member for jobs and the local economy, said the free Wi-Fi would be a real boost for the town centre.

She said: “In our increasingly digital age, people like to use social media and the internet on the go.

“A key priority for the council is to extend prosperity and as the town centre repositions itself as a leisure destination, there will be more people living and socialising in the town centre.

“Free Wi-Fi in public spaces and public buildings will really help residents and tourists connect with each other and stay in touch with local events, making the town centre a more vibrant destination and supporting local businesses to thrive and grow.”

The proposal is for a third party to undertake the running of the scheme, with no cost to the council.

A council spokeswoman added: “If cabinet and commissioners agree the plans, the council will undertake a competitive procurement exercise for a contractor to provide the service, with the successful bidder then installing the necessary equipment and running the free Wi-Fi service.”
