FREE parking on Saturdays is returning to Rotherham town centre as council bosses finally bow to pressure from traders.
About 1,000 spaces will be available across Wellgate multi-storey, Drummond Street and Forge Island from April.
Council leader Cllr Chris Read said: “I’m pleased that we are able extend free town centre parking on Saturdays.
“But the fundamentally financial pressures faced by all councils continue. No one should be in any doubt that austerity is not over yet.”
The two-year budget has a funding gap of £30 million, which means the council will have made cuts of £200 million in a decade.
A council spokeswoman said: “In setting its fees and charges for the coming year, the council is proposing to respond to long-term demands for more free town centre parking at weekends.”
