Free Prince's Trust programme open to young people

YOUNG people who are not in work or education can take part in a free programme which is designed to improve their job prospects.

The Prince’s Trust runs a 12-week programme for 16 to 25-year-olds in Barnsley which is delivered by South Yorkshire Police and South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue.

The applicants can get involved in a wide range of activities designed to develop their essential life skills, build their confidence and develop their independence, preparing them for a working and adult life.

The programme, based at Barnsley Fire Station, will include a residential trip to the Peak District, a community project, work experience, learning how to write a CV and supporting community groups.

PCSO Shaun McDermott, assistant team leader of the Prince’s Trust programme, said: “There are three courses ran each year, and each one is made up of usually around 12 to 14 students who come from a variety of backgrounds, and a wide range of abilities.

“There are many team programmes throughout the country, but being the only one that is delivered by fire and police, we are also able to draw on excellent learning opportunities with both services, including drill days with fire crews, and operations with the police which are both great for developing the confidence of the students.”

Students will learn English and maths and gain qualifications in team working, employability, first aid, working safely and food hygiene.
