Four arrested at Leeds game – but police praise fans

FOUR football fans were arrested and several ordered out of town after Friday’s Yorkshire derby match.

Around 11,000 people — including 2,300 away fans — attended the sold out game, which Rotherham won 2-1.

South Yorkshire Police could not confirm on Tuesday afternoon who was arrested or why.

The force spent days planning for the game between Rotherham and Leeds, deploying hundreds of officers to stop disorder.

The joint operation also included West Yorkshire Police and British Transport Police along with PCSOs, special constables and licensees.

It involved more than 250 officers and staff from all over North East England.

Chief Insp Richard Butterworth of South Yorkshire Police oversaw the operation. He praised supporters for helping to minimise disorder.

“I’d like to thank everyone for their co-operation at [the] match,” he said. “From the fans to the licensees, to our partners and the officers and staff, whose professionalism and careful planning ensured the game passed with very few incidents.”

He added: “With over 11,000 fans there was the potential for trouble to start. However, the majority came for the love of the game and enjoyed watching a great match.

“We only had a small number causing trouble that were quickly dealt with.

“I would like to thank all fans for ensuring the match was a safe and enjoyable game for everyone, made even better with the win to Rotherham.”
