Former Navy man denies sexually abusing teenager

A FORMER sailor has gone on trial accused of sexually abusing a teenage girl in the 1970s.

Barrie Jackson (80), of Sandygate, Wath, is on trial at Sheffield Crown Court accused of four counts of indecent assault against the girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons.

Giving evidence yesterday (Tuesday), Jackson told the jury he never sexually assaulted the girl.

Defending, Mr Peter Hampton said: “Have you ever sexually assaulted [the girl]?”

Jackson said: “No.”

Mr Hampton asked: “Did you ever physically assault her?

Jackson replied “No.”

Mr Hampton asked: “Were you ever alone with [her] in the bathroom?” 

Jackson said: “No.”

Mr Hampton said: “Did you ever expose yourself to her when she was 15?”

The defendant replied: "No".

Jackson said he was in the Navy in the 1950s and 1960s, serving on ships such as HMS Victory and HMS Scorpion. After leaving the Navy he said he had worked on the telephone lines for the General Post Office.

Jackson denies the offences. The trial continues.
