Football for 40 lockdown breach reported in Ferham

POLICE said they had stepped up patrols at a park where up to 40 people have reportedly been gathering to play football in breach of lockdown rules.

Residents in Ferham said they were upset police had not issued any fines and the groups continued to congregate at Ferham Park.

Guidelines issued by the Government on Monday allow people to play sport with their own family and meet someone from another household outside but large gatherings remain banned.

One resident said he had seen between 30 and 40 people at the park on a regular basis.

Another said the issue was “outraging many people”, adding: “Many of us have children and grandchildren who, come June 1, will have to mix with these ignorant people’s families.

“The police car in the area yesterday watched for five minutes before driving off.

“I asked an officer this morning about the problem and he just said they understand the problem and they are monitoring it.”

The resident said he had reported the issue to the police and warned if not dealt with quickly could cause community unrest.

“I have never encountered any problems when I have taken my son and daughter in the park to play football at the side of them before Covid-19 became a major problem,” he added.

A police spokeswoman said two officers had come across a large group playing football last Tuesday, adding: “The two PCSOs advised those present around the importance of social distancing, and the group dispersed with no issues.”

She confirmed increased patrols were being made of the area.
