A PARISH councillor secured £12,000 to help his village protect itself from future flooding.

Cllr Tony Griffin (pictured, above) submitted the funding application to South Yorkshire Community Foundation on behalf of Whiston Parish Council.

The money will be used on equipment like pumps, sandbags and floodkits, after work is carried out to identify those affected by recent floods.

Cllr Griffin, who is a Labour candidate for RMBC’s Sitwell ward at the local elections, said: “The impacts of flooding can be devastating and life-changing for anyone caught up in a flood.

“This funding will support our community in Whiston and help develop our resilience to the impacts of flooding, strengthening our individual resolve and emotional health in these challenging moments.

“I’m proud to have secured this funding for Whiston and I’ll continue working hard for our residents and our community.”

Whiston Parish Council will also purchase similar equipment for use when needed to respond to flooding incidents.
