FLOODING: Baby among those rescued from water by Rotherham firefighters

A BABY was rescued from a vehicle stranded in floodwater last night after a month's worth of rain fell in 24 hours.

Two adults and a baby were stuck in Northfield at around 11.06pm and crews from South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue donned waders to push the vehicle to safety, a spokesman for the service said.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue declared a major incident last night at around 11.30pm as a result of widespread flooding in Rotherham and beyond.

They have so far rescued more than 120 people and have taken more than 1,200 emergency calls.

Three men were stranded in a vehicle on Hooton Road, Kilnhurst, at 4.33pm yesterday (Thursday), and were helped out.

Firefighters rescued a person stranded in a vehicle on Old Sheffield Road, Canklow, at 7.30pm last night.

The water had flooded the car up to the steering wheel, said a spokesperson.

On Hague Lane at Wentworth, at 7.52pm, firefighters helped to transfer a patient to an ambulance, and at 8.03pm on Fitzwilliam Road at Eastwood they helped people whose homes had been flooded.

Firefighters were called to a stranded vehicle at Recreation Road, Wath, at 8.21pm.

Three people were left stranded on the roof of their car on Old Sheffield Road, Canklow, at 9.18pm, with water up to their windscreen. They were rescued by firefighters, the spokesperson said.

Firefighters rescued a man who was stranded in a field of water at 10.02pm in Rawmarsh. He had abandoned his vehicle.

A paramedic and the occupant of a vehicle were rescued from Treeton Lane at 10.24pm after being stood in cold water for a long period of time. They were assisted by the ambulance service, said the spokesperson.

Firefighters helped an elderly woman leave her property on Meadow Street, Laughton Common, at 11.18pm.

A man was stranded in his van at 11.22pm on Aldwarke Lane, Rotherham. He had no injuries and crews were able to get him to a place of safety.

Firefighters helped an ambulance get to an elderly lady in her home on Frederick Street at 11.42pm.

In the early hours of this morning firefighters helped a man who was trapped in a van on Aldwarke Lane. They used a paddle boat to get to him.

The fire service warned people never to enter flood water either on foot or in the car.
