One objector said the plan would add too much traffic to the junction, which is near Liberty Steel’s main entrance.

Dalton Parish Council welcomed the proposal for the former Lloyds building, which was constructed in 1904 by the Masbrough Equitable Pioneers Society and was the village’s first Co-op.

A council spokesman said: “The principle of residential development in this location is considered to be acceptable.

“The measurements taken indicated that noise levels in the surroundings were not of a level that may be expected to generate complaints and environmental health were satisfied.

“The proposals are considered to be acceptable from a highway safety perspective.”
