Flash of Ukrainian colours among crowd at Rawmarsh remembrance

SCOOTER riders and a young man wearing the national colours of Ukraine were among those paying their respects in Rawmarsh on Remembrance Day.

Betty Smith, who attended the service, said: “Perhaps the crowd was so big this year because on a daily basis we are seeing in print and on television the horrors of war in Ukraine, and remembering our own conflicts and the fallen from the past to the present day.

“A young man wearing the Ukraine colours a blue jacket and a yellow hoody he gently wiped tears from his eyes as we all stood in silence at 11 o’clock, the lady close by who was also wiping tears from her eyes.

“Not a sound was heard during the two minutes’ silence.

“A sad and sombre situation where people from Rawmarsh once again came together to pay respects and remember why we must never forget.

“One particular group had brought a touch of colour to this gathering, they had arrived on scooters and a couple of motorbikes, all perfectly lined up at the side of the road.

“So many people had gathered this year that some had to stand on the opposite side of the road so they could observe proceedings.

“People of Rawmarsh have once again shown the area in its true colours, they gathered with respect and wear their poppies with pride.”
