A woman and a five-year-old girl from Wath suffered life-threatening injuries after the car they were travelling in careered onto a roundabout.

Police are appealing for witnesses after a blue BMW 318 travelling along the A6195 Park Spring Road appeared to continue onto a roundabout without braking, around 900 metres on the Middlecliffe side of the junction with Springvale Road.

The car then left the carriageway and went up a banking before rolling over in a nearby field.

The front seat passenger, a 35-year-old woman, and a rear-seat passenger, a five-year-old girl, both from Wath, suffered life-threatening injuries in the accident and were both detained at Barnsley District General Hospital.

Another rear seat passenger, an 11-year-old boy from Wath, sustained a broken left arm and is also detained in hospital.

The driver of the BMW, a 36-year-old Wath man, suffered a slight ankle injury and was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.

The incident happened just before 3.30pm yesterday.
