Five-a-side face-off to help players during Ramadan

AN AFTER-dark tournament will be held to help five-a-side footballers maintain their energy and exercise during Ramadan.

Rotherham United Community Sports Trust is hosting the late-night matches on Fridays during the Muslim fasting period.

Inclusion officer Trudi Race said: “The tournament is important because it gives people the chance to still participate in a sport they enjoy, around fasting and prayer times.

“Everyone is in the same situation with regards to energy levels so the playing field is fair. This, however, doesn’t mean it’s any less competitive than your usual five-a-side!”

She added: “This year will be the third consecutive year that the trust has run a football tournament through the four weeks of Ramadan.

“Last year saw over 60 men participate in the tournament and this year we are confident in an increase.”

The Ramadan Football Midnight Trophy is for over-18s and begins weekly sessions at Rotherham Football Centre, Eastwood, on May 18.

Sessions are 11.30pm to 1.30am and finals night is June 8.

Anyone interested in entering a team can contact Trudi on 01709 827767 or [email protected].
