Fitness is a question of feeling fruity!

TODAY is Fruity Friday and health experts are hoping to help raise awareness about the benefits of getting your five-a-day.

Fruity Friday is an annual campaign by World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF UK), to inform people about the links between diet and nutrition and cancer prevention.

The event also aims to raise funds for cancer research and education programmes about cancer prevention.

Statistics show that one in three people in the UK will develop cancer at some point in their lives.

About a third of the most common cancers can be prevented by eating healthily, being physically active and maintaining a healthy weight.

Catherine Blakemore, NHS Rotherham health promotion specialist said: “Reducing the risk of cancer is about making long-term changes to the foods we eat and how active we are, as well as maintaining a healthy weight.

“When it comes to a healthy diet, balance is the key to getting it right. We all need to provide our bodies with the energy and nutrients required to function well and feel great.

“That means eating a wide variety of foods in the right proportion, so that over time we get all the nutrients we need to keep ourselves healthy.

“Meals based on starchy foods such as rice and pasta, with plenty of fruit and vegetables, and not too much fat, salt or sugar, will give you all the nutrients you need, without the extra calories you don’t.”
