First-half fireworks from the Millers ... on-the-whistle report: Rotherham United 4 Reading 0

RAMPANT Rotherham United swept to their biggest-ever Championship win under manager Paul Warne as they swatted aside the challenge of Reading at AESSEAL New York Stadium this afternoon.

In searing temperatures the Millers tuned up the heat against the Royals to make it four points from their opening two matches.

All the damage was done in the first half as they hit the visitors with an 11-minute three-goal blitz and then added a fourth on the stroke of half-time.

Richard Wood opened the scoring, Conor Washington and Jamie Lindsay quickly added more and Chiedozie Ogbene rounded off a stunning opening period.

The Millers were ahead after only seven minutes and it was captain Wood who made the breakthrough for the home side.

Ben Wiles crossed superbly from the left and the evergreen skipper rose higher than anyone to plant the ball into the corner of the net.

Five minutes later, Tom Holmes tested Rotherham goalkeeper Viktor Johansson with a far-post header but it was Rotherham who were making much the better start.

On 15 minutes Dan Barlaser released Washington and the striker appeared to have run out of room to get a shot away on the right flank.

There was no angle to work with yet the summer signing lashed an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net.

Seconds later, Ogbene made the break and Washington's header was only an inch over the bar, with keeper Joe Lumley nowhere to be seen.

Lumley was back in his goal in the 18th minute but might as well not have been as he made a complete hash of gathering Lindsay's shot and the ball trickled over the line.

The sun was beating down and the mood at a buoyant New York matched the weather as the crowd revelled in what they were seeing.

A drinks break paused the visitors' misery and a refreshed Tom Ince should have done more than hit the side-netting when he had time and space at the back post.

The action calmed down and half-time was approaching by the time of the next serious attempts on goal, Nesta Guinness-Walker directing a first-time effort wide from the centre of the penalty area and Junior Hoilett twice forcing stops from Johansson.

In time added on, Ogbene showed the Royals how to finish, rounding the hapless Lumley with ease and firing the ball home to earn him and his teammates a standing ovation as they left the field at the break.

Washington had recovered from the dead leg he'd picked up in the Carabao Cup victory at Port Vale in midweek and was named in the starting 11 but wing-back Peter Kioso missed out with a groin problem.

Unsurprisingly, Warne went with the same side that had performed so well in the opening-day draw against Swansea City a fortnight ago.

That meant Ogbene, a scorer in both his previous outings this season, was paired down the middle again with Washington.

Reading, as they had to, came out and attacked at the start of the second half but the Millers came close to going even further ahead when Wood flashed a header over in front of the North Stand and substitute Georgie Kelly teed up Wiles whose close-range attempt was blocked.

Hoilett brought a sharp save from Johansson as the clocked ticked down but the contest had long been over.

The crowd rose again at the final whistle on an afternoon when Rotherham scored four goals in a Championship match under Warme for the first time.
