Firefighters spend two hours tackling blaze at empty house in Rotherham

ARSONISTS started a fire at a house in Rotherham town centre in the early hours of this morning (Monday).

Firefighters from Rotherham, Maltby and Aston stations were called to a house on Wellgate at 1.30am where a deliberate fire had been started on the ground floor, a spokeswoman for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said.

"There were no occupants and no injuries were reported," she said.

"The ground floor was well alight."

Firefighters left the scene at 3.30am, she added.
