Firefighters battle massive hay bale fire

FIREFIGHTERS battled through the night after two stacks of bales were targeted in an arson attack.

The two stacks, on opposite sides of a field at Manor Farm, Clifton Hill, Conisbrough, caught fire shortly before midnight on Tuesday.

Crews from Maltby and Edlington fire stations were able to save half of a larger stack of more than 400 bales at the same time as battling a separate blaze involving around 60 bales.

Firefighters from Rotherham Station relieved the two crews part way through the night as the operation continued until 8am this morning.

A fire brigade spokeswoman said: “Given that there were two separate fires in close proximity, but at separate sides of the same field, it became apparent that this was probably a deliberate attack.

“Following some investigation of the circumstances, this proved to be the case.”
