Firefighter rescues man from River Don near Rotherham's Forge Island

A MAN who got trapped in the River Don was successfully rescued by a specially-trained firefighter.

A MAN who got trapped in the River Don was successfully rescued by a specially-trained firefighter last night. 

Fire crews from Rotherham and Aston Park were called to the River Don near Forge Island at 7.50pm after receiving reports a man was trapped.

They found the man was holding on to a buoy around five metres from the bank sid but struggling to float, said a spokeswoman from South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue.

"A firefighter, specially trained in technical and water rescue, entered the water to rescue the man before handing him over to the ambulance service," she added.

"Crews left the scene at 9pm."
