The Symphony of Metal, Fire and Water, which took place at Rotherham Lock, featured flares, fireworks, flame-throwers and a flotilla of narrowboats and kayaks.

A coal-powered barge - one of only eight left in the UK - took part in the parade on Saturday, backed by poetry readings and live music.

Bands performed both on a barge and on balconies of the Keppel Wharf apartment block, lit by lamps and flares.

The performance finished with a singer emerging from within Keppel Wharf’s walls, followed by an encore from the floating brass band.

It was organised by composer and artist Ansuman Biswas, who once spent 40 days living as a hermit in Manchester Museum.

Observers crowded the towpath, Forge Island and a Main Street bridge to witness the multimedia event.

The joint production by Open Minds Theatre Company and Eye Music Trust - the company behind Colourscape - cost around £20,000 to stage.
