Final call to support Advertiser’s ‘Chuckle Square’ campaign in honour of comedy duo

THERE’S no time for slacking as we make a final call for support for our Chuckle Square campaign.

The Advertiser is calling for the public space outside Boots in Rotherham town centre to be named in honour of Paul and Barry.

Our petition has gained more than 1,300 supporters so far — and there is still time to add your support.

We will then deliver all entries to Rotherham Borough Council for consideration.

Editor Andrew Mosley said: “Our call for Chuckle Square has proved very popular with readers, both online and in the paper.

“This would put the Chuckles on the map in Rotherham town centre, just as they have put Rotherham on the map in so many other ways.

“We’re making a last call for support before we leave it to the council to make a decision.”

Also throwing his weight behind the campaign is ex-Mayor Shaukat Ali, who helped launch Rotherham Hospice’s Midnight Memory Walk with the Brothers in 2010.

He described Barry as a “legend” and said naming the square after them would help inspire young people to follow in their showbiz footsteps, as well as honouring their long-running contribution to the town.

“I think it’s a great idea and I’m all for it,” said Mr Ali.

Our petition is likely to be referred to RMBC’s overview and scrutiny management board, who will make a recommendation to either cabinet or full council.
