A PETITION has been launched to halt the possible closure of a health centre, with an MP saying the uncertainty around its future was “very worrying”.
Clifton Medical Centre says it has taken the “difficult decision” to consult its patients over the potential closure of Wickersley Health Centre.
They first set up a survey to allow patients to review the future of its Wickersley branch on Monday, April 4.
The survey will close to patients on Friday, June 24, with the GP practice saying the decision to consult over the closure “has not been taken lightly” and the “well-being of patients remains the priority”.
However, John Healey, MP for Wentworth and Dearne, along with local Labour councillors, has pledged to support patients in halting the closure of the centre and have now created a petition.
Mr Healey said he had received concerns from constituents regarding the impact the closure of the centre — which has .... patients — would have on them.
These included, including complaints will have to travel to Clifton Medical Centre in Clifton, which is an 11-minute journey in a car from Wickersley — and considerably longer by bus — to see their GP for tests, prescriptions or nurse appointments and GP appointments.
The petition urges GPs to rethink their decision and revealing the reasons behind the planned closure.
Mr Healey and Wickersley councillor were out in Wickersley on Saturday morning (May 21) talking to residents about the consultation, and 100 people signed the petition on the day.
Mr Healey said “Everyone has trouble getting to see their GP and it’s clear that no one wants to see this surgery close.
“Patients from a much wider area than Wickersley have been registered there for years and many will find it much harder to get to Clifton.
“Other GPs in the area are already full, so it won't be easy for patients to find another GP.
“The uncertainty is very worrying and I hope the GPs will use this consultation to rethink their plans.
“This is why alongside local councillors in Wickersley, we’ve launched our petition making clear we want to see our local Wickersley surgery kept open.
“I would urge patients and relatives to make their views clear in the consultation or sign up to our petition to stop any possible closure of this Wickersley surgery.”
Cllr Ellis said she was “very concerned” to learn of the consultation, adding: “
“I know residents will find it very difficult to travel into Clifton to attend appointments.
“This review is causing a lot of uncertainty for patients and I would urge Clifton Medical Centre to rethink their plans for our Wickersley surgery and keep it open.”
Clifton Medical Centre said in a statement: “The decision to review the future of the branch surgery has not been taken lightly and the well-being of patients remains the priority.
“The purpose of this survey is to consider the views of our patients and stakeholders and understand more fully what the impact of the change may be.”
