Fifth man arrested in murder inquiry

A FIFTH man has been arrested by police in connection with the death of a man found seriously injured at his home last month.

The man, aged 56, was arrested today on suspicion of of the murder of Stafford Garner (pictured) and has since been bailed pending further enquiries.

Mr Garner was found by paramedics at his home in Monsal Street, Thurnscoe, at around 4.40pm on Thursday, April 2.

He was taken to hospital where he remained in a critical condition until his death three days later.

A postmortem examination gave the preliminary cause of death as a head injury, which is subject to further investigations.

Senior investigating officer Det Insp Rob Platts said: "We remain keen to hear from anyone who may hold information about Mr Garner's death and how he came to be fatally injured.

"We appreciate that many people will have been indoors due to the government guidance around the pandemic, but we'd like to hear from anyone who knew Mr Garner or anyone who lived locally who may have heard or seen anything suspicious.

Four other men aged 28, 29, 31 and 41 have previously been arrested on suspicion of murder and bailed pending further enquiries.

Detectives are still keen to hear from anyone with information on 101 quoting incident number 494 of April 2 or online at the MIPP site.
