AN ENTREPRENEUR who founded a candle and soap supplies business from his garage has been recognised among the country’s top self-starting traders.
Nicky Story, from Mexborough, is the chief executive of Supplies For Candles, The Soap Kitchen and Glassprint, which supplies candle and soap making ingredients and products.
The 30-year-old was named small business entrepreneur of the year for the north-west and Yorkshire and The Humber region at the Great British Entrepreneur Awards.
Supplies for Candles has grown to a multi-million pound business with sales more than doubling in the past year alone and turnover predicted at more than £20 million this year.
The firm has 100,000 customers and employs more than 100 staff in Mexborough and Devon.
“I’m so pleased and proud to have won this award,” said Nicky.
“When they called my name out, I was genuinely overwhelmed.
“I started this whole thing on my own in my garage, but it’s my incredibly talented team from both ends of the country who make all the difference, this is another exciting step for us as a company as we rapidly grow and continue to celebrate collectively all that we have achieved.”
At the beginning of the pandemic, Nicky gave away £100,000-worth of candle making kits and start-up packs to support those who had been financially affected by the pandemic, helping 2,000 people to found their own businesses.
Nicky said his 2022 goal was to further expand his team and look into other branches of business, adding: “I am confident and determined to reach £100 million within five years. I plan to change the world for the better.”
