Expansion plans revealed for town centre Wetherspoons pub

A TOWN centre pub has expanded its plans to boost its beer garden with new proposals including an overhaul inside.

JD Wetherspoon was already eyeing a larger exterior area by expanding on to the car park outside the grade II-listed Bluecoat.

Now the firm has filed plans to demolish the rear extension - and add a new, larger one in its place.
The plans said: “This will allow for a larger customer area and a larger kitchen to cater for the customer numbers.

“The single-storey kitchen extension will be in stone to match the existing building.
The proposed customer area extension is to be in contrast to this, in a modern steel framed construction.

“The establishment is well-known and the external seating area is often fully seated during peak times, hence the need for additional seating.”

Inside, the expanded kitchen would mean the bar could be pushed back away from the main entrance.
Wetherspoon’s says the loss of the five-space car park would be acceptable because there are plenty of other spaces nearby, including at the Wellgate multi-storey.

The building was originally used as a charity school, opened in 1708.
It was listed in 1951.

Plans submitted last year asked only to expand the beer garden onto the car park and would not have changed the interior.
