Ex-mayor on sex charges

EX-MAYOR Barry Dodson faces a New Year’s Eve day in court after being sent to the Crown Court over an allegation of sexually abusing a teenage girl in the 1980s.

Dodson, who quit the civic role in June, just three weeks after taking office, appeared at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court this morning.

Now an independent councillor, he is accused of indecently assaulting a 13-year-old girl in 1987.

The 67-year-old former lorry driver, steel worker, salesman and miner, who wore a suit and red tie for his court appearance, spoke only to confirm his name and address.

He was represented by solicitor but was not accompanied by any family.

Dodson, a former youth worker and ex-soldier of Cranworth Road, Eastwood, entered no plea and was bailed to appear at Sheffield Crown Court on New Year’s Eve.

One of his bail conditions is not to contact his alleged victim
