Ex-Mayor denies child sex assault charge

FORMER Rotherham mayor Barry Dodson will stand trial later this year after denying indecently assaulting a 13-year-old girl.

Cllr Dodson appeared at Sheffield Crown Court today and pleaded not guilty to the offence, which is alleged to have taken place in 1987.

The independent councillor, of Cranworth Road, Rotherham, resigned from the Labour party after the allegation came to light last summer — just three weeks after he took on the role of Rotherham’s first citizen.

He was bailed to appear for trial in August.
