A spokeswoman confirmed they had been called to a property in Central Avenue at about 10.30am after a gas engineer “raised concerns about some gas safety issues”.

Roads had been closed as a precaution, she said, dismissing claims of an explosion in the area.

Several police vehicles and two fire engines were called to the scene.

Police later confirmed the roads had reopened and residents were allowed home, adding: “Thank you for your support and patience while this matter was looked into.”
