Eight Coronavirus deaths this week

EIGHT people have died from coronavirus this week at Rotherham Hospital and inpatient numbers have doubled.

As of Wednesday, 61 patients were being treated for the virus — up 31 from last week — and seven were in critical care.

A total of 217 patients have died from the virus since the start of the pandemic and 521 patients have been discharged.

The chief nurse and director of infection control at Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust, Angela Wood, said hospital appointments, operations and those needing to attend the Urgent and Emergency Care Centre (UECC) were continuing as normal.

Patients should not attend if they develop Covid-19 symptoms or have been asked to self-isolate.

Rotherham’s infection rate rose to 362.5 per 100,000 people from 243 between October 12 and 18.

Ms Wood said people needed to support NHS staff and stick by the rules ahead of the Tier 3 restrictions and flu season.

She added: “We can do this by continuing to wash our hands, face coverings must cover the nose and mouth to be effective, and to keep a two-metre distance, as is reducing social contact in line with the Tier 3 restrictions coming into force from the weekend.”

People are being asked to not visit the hospital if they don’t need to.

“As we face a rise in coronavirus cases and head towards winter, I ask that you keep the UECC for emergencies only,” she said.

“Other healthcare options are available across Rotherham that may be better suited to your needs and enables us to continue to provide care to those most in need.”
