East Dene homes evacuated over "gas safety" fears

HOMES have been evacuated and a cordon put in place in East Dene over fears relating to a house’s gas supply, police said.

A spokeswoman confirmed they had been called to a property in Central Avenue at about 10.30am after a gas engineer “raised concerns about some gas safety issues”.

She dismissed reports on social media of an explosion but said residents had been evacuated while investigations took place.

Several police vehicles and two fire engines are at the scene.

Central Avenue, Green Road and Moor Road in East Dene are all closed.

The police spokeswoman said: “As a precaution the roads have been closed and some residents evacuated.

“We want to reassure the local community that the road closures and evacuations are a precautionary measure at this time — there has not been an explosion.”
