THERE’S another big bird on the loose!

Two years ago, the Dearne Valley was gripped by the saga of the wandering rhea, which spent a week on the run at Sprotbrough Flash nature reserve.

Now it seems another large feathered figure is out and about, with reader Martin Roper — who alerted us to the rambling rhea back in 2017 — having spotted what appeared to be an emu.

“It’s obviously not flown there so it must belong to someone, it was roaming free,” said Martin.

The earlier escapee was eventually nabbed by the RSPCA, with inspector Jo Taylor describing it as a tricky catch and adding: “Rheas have the potential to be dangerous as they are strong, fast and have sharp claws. In fact, he managed to tear my trousers with them.”

Have you had an emu go missing? Or do you know who the big bird could belong to? If so, get in touch with us or the RSPCA.
