A WOMAN was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after a crash which closed the M1 for ten hours.

The 43-year-old was driving a black Vauxhall Corsa, which collided with a maroon DAF heavy goods vehicle and hit the central barrier.

A second smash followed involving the Corsa yellow Volvo HGV and a silver Renault Trafic occurred.

It happened at about 6.30am today (Wednesday) on the southbound carriageway between junctions 31 and 32, and the road was closed until 4.30pm.

Several kilometres of traffic within the closed-off section needed to be turned around and diverted, which took until the afternoon.

Police thanked motorists for their patience and appealed for witnesses and dashcam footage of what happened.
