The Northern Ireland international had been a free agent after leaving Charlton Athletic at the end of this season.

Paul Warne, manager of the promoted Millers, is planning to bring in up to nine new players for the club's bid to establish themselves in the Championship and moved quickly to tie up the 30-year-old.

The boss held talks with Washington who travelled north to AESSEAL New York Stadium on Wednesday to finalise the deal.

“He’s a player I really like. He’s someone I’ve tried to sign in the past,” Warne said.

Washington said: “It’s great to be here. The manager and his coaching staff set their stall out very early in terms of their interest.

“This has always been a football club that me and my agent thought would suit me down to the ground in terms of style of play and what the fans expect from a player. I think it’s going to be a really good fit."

Rotherham are looking to strengthen up front after parting company with Freddie Ladapo and with the future of top scorer Michael Smith still uncertain.

Washington, an international teammate of Millers winger Shane Ferguson, scored 22 goals in 71 League One outings during his two-year stay with the Addicks.

Twelve of them came in 37 appearances this season when he was on target against Warne's men in a 1-1 draw at the Valley in November.

Born in Kent, he began his career with Newport County and has also played for Peterborough United, Queens Park Rangers, who paid £2.5 million for him, Sheffield United and Hearts.

The player, who is in the Irish squad for Nations League matches next month, has considerable second-tier experience from his time with QPR and the Blades.

Another centre-forward Rotherham are speaking to is former New York loanee Tom Eaves who has been released by Hull City.

The Millers are also in the market for new centre-halves, wing-backs/wingers on both flanks and a midfielder.
