AN ANIMAL shelter has come to the rescue of a dog brought in in a “heartbreaking condition”.

Helping Yorkshire Poundies, which based in Rotherham, said Barney had been found abandoned in a woods and they believe he “couldn’t have got there on his own” because he could barely walk.

He also is very skinny, with no muscle at all, and has suspected arthritis on his legs, the sanctuary said.

Despite this, he was described as having a “lot of spirit” and was said to have a “cheeky glint in his eye”.

Barney is now in a foster home and receiving round the clock care ahead of surgery and further treatment.

A spokeperson for HYPS added: “We know he’s an old boy, but we firmly believe that senior dogs shouldn’t be written off and we will do all we possibly can for him to keep him comfortable, but always keeping in mind quality of life.

“Please donate towards Barney’s care if you can — he has a big surgery ahead of him and we’ll really need your help to fund this.”
