A man offered to carry out maintenance work on the roof of a property in Bawtry Road on February 22.

The owner of the property consented and agreed to pay him £30 for the work.

The man returned the following day at noon with four other men to carry out the work.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “After completing another inspection of the roof, the man claimed additional work was needed and a new price of £850 was agreed.

“The victim handed over £560 and was due to pay the remainder once the work was complete.

“On becoming suspicious of their activity, the victim asked the men to produce documents of the company they worked for and proof of paperwork.

“The men failed to provide the information and made off without completing the work.”

It is believed the cowboy builders had been driving a silver Ford Focus with Trojan Building and Roofing printed on the front.

Anyone with information is asked to report it via 101 quoting incident number 430 of February 23.
