The intriguing item is a heavy metal bowl shape — with the words “this church was repaired AD 1812” underneath.

A woman on Spinneyfield found the object and passed it on to Tony Dodsworth, of Rawmarsh and Parkgate Local History Group.

He said: “The lady thought it might be a bell because of the shape but it doesn’t make a sound.

“The intriguing thing is the words underneath. I expect it went on a stand, almost like a portable font.

“I’ve had it for a few months now and I think this is my last shot of finding out more information about it.

“I was thinking it might be connected with the independent chapel. But there are some big places on Moorgate and it could be linked with people who lived there.”

Anyone who is able to help can call Tony on 01709 363151.
