Disruption as Rotherham United wait on Coventry City pitch verdict

The Millers had been due to set off at 5pm today for an overnight stay in a hotel near the Coventry Building Society Arena.

However, there are concerns over the state of the playing surface after Commonwealth Games rugby sevens matches were contested on it and an official pitch inspection is scheduled for 6pm this evening.

If the match is on, Paul Warne's men will be leaving later than they wanted to.

A referee yesterday described the pitch as unsafe and Coventry boss Mark Robins - a former Rotherham player and manager - said there was "no chance" the game could be played unless the work of grounds staff leads to significant improvements.

“It’s nowhere near the level that we expect or need," he said in his pre-match media conference. "It’s not safe at the moment."

The Sky Blues don't own the stadium and feel as frustrated by events as people in the Millers camp.

“We’ve been let down," Robins said. "The fixture can’t be played if the pitch is dangerous. We’ve got to get it up to standard and it’s not up to standard at the moment."

The ground is owned by Wasps Group - whose interests include Wasps Rugby Union Club who are also based at the arena - and it is they who sanctioned Commonwealth Games rugby matches being played there.
