'Disgust' at theft from church

A POLICE officer said he was “disgusted” after a crucifix was stolen from a church.

The religious ornament was snatched from St Hilda’s Church in Thurnscoe between Saturday, April 1, and Friday, April 7.

The place of worship, on Hanover Street, was broken into and a number of items, including the ornate altar cross crucifix, were stolen.

Police are now hoping that people will recognise the crucifix from a picture released in a bid to track it down.

Investigating officer PC Michael Herring said: “I am disgusted and astonished that anyone would steal such items from a place of worship and I’m asking for anyone who may have seen or been offered this crucifix, or any other religious items, to please come forward and contact police.

“We are hoping that through the help of the public, we will be able to recover the items and return them to their rightful place.”

Anyone with information about the crucifix or any other religious items is urged to contact the police on 101.

Information can also be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
