Police believe he had been assaulted at some point last Thursday in Meadow Close, Dalton, and he was found unresponsive early on Sunday afternoon and died despite the efforts of an ambulance crew at the scene.

His family have been informed and are currently being supported by specialist officers, the spokesman said.

"Enquiries immediately led to the arrest of a 23-year-old man from Rotherham on suspicion of murder," said the spokesman.

"He has since been released on bail as enquiries continue, and this is no longer being treated as a murder investigation."

The spokesman said any future decisions on whether he would be re-arrested would be based on what the enquiry uncovered.

Officers would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the assault on Meadow Close.
