Dinnington College confirmed to close this summer

A SPECIALIST college has confirmed it plans to close this summer — affecting more than 500 pupils and 122 staff members.

Staff at Dinnington College were told yesterday the site is earmarked to shut in July.

It comes two months after a consultation period was launched in November by RNN Group, which also manages University Centre Rotherham, Rotherham College, Dearne Valley College and North Notts College.

There are currently approximately 575 learners studying 38 courses the Doe Quarry Lane site.

Students and parents have spoken of their upset at the news, which has left them in turmoil.

An upset animal care student said the closure had ruined his dream of working with animals, adding: “My passion gone, all because of management at Dinnington College.”

Bill Bowers (50), of North Anston, whose disabled son is midway through his foundation course, branded the decision “absolutely disgusting”.

He added: “Dinnington will yet again have the heart ripped out.

“So many jobs and other businesses are going to suffer now.”

Courses and staff will be moved to other sites — but next month’s open day will still go ahead.

RNN Group said the campus was under-utilised and costly to maintain.

Chief executive officer and principal Jason Austin said: “We understand the affection for Dinnington Campus and regret that we are putting jobs at risk.”

A 45-day consultation process with staff and trade unions began on Wednesday.

The consultation, which affects 122 staff in total and the full-time equivalent of 96 jobs, outlines the relocation of 56 full-time equivalent jobs to other college sites.

The number of proposed job losses is equivalent to 40 full-time equivalent roles.

A spokeswoman said all of this year’s courses would continue as planned, with 480 students due to finish this summer and 40 on short courses.

Those staying on next year would see their courses moved to Rotherham College, North Notts College and Dearne Valley College, which are not part of the staff consultation, she said.
