Diggers move in to latest Rotherham Renaissance site

INVESTIGATION work has started on the latest phase of the Rotherham Renaissance—a new public open space on the banks of the River Don.

Exploratory work has begun on the next phase of the Westgate Demonstrator Project, which will ultimately see the creation of a public open space complete with underground car parking next to the river, behind the shops on Corporation Street.

Three deep exploratory excavations will be carried out on the Weirside car park, the former abattoir site.

Over four weeks the investigation works will be carried out in sequence, working from the southern-most part of the site—by the road access to Tesco - towards the Riverside Shopping Precinct.

The works will affect a temporary car park was opened before last Christmas.

During the first phase of the works, ten spaces next to the retaining wall of the NatWest Bank will remain open for use by the public but the whole car park will be closed for health and safety reasons later in the programme of works.

Businesses adjoining the site have been informed of the investigation works and Rotherham Borough Council will be erecting signs to the car park to keep shoppers and motorists aware of the on-going parking situation.
