Did you see fatal M1 crash near Woodall services?

A 62-year-old woman died after a car hit the broken down vehicle she had been travelling in on the M1.

She and the driver had got out of the grey Nissan Qashqai on the northbound carriageway about a mile past the Woodall services last night (Sunday).

About 16 minutes later, shortly before 10pm, a Mercedes E-class hit the stationary vehicle, which then collided with the passenger, who died at the scene. 

There is no hard shoulder on this part of the motorway.

A grey Peugeot 407 and a black VW Golf were also involved in collisions with the Mercedes and each other, South Yorkshire Police said.

A 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He remained in custody this morning.

A police spokesman said: “Officers want to hear from anyone who may have been travelling on the M1 northbound, who may have witnessed the multi-vehicle collision or seen any of the vehicles involved prior to the collision.”
